John; One of a kind

John; One of a Kind

John Daniel Sullenberger, age 50, passed away just before Mother’s Day 2025, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, generosity and connection. Born to Charlene and Jim Sullenberger, John lived a life defined by love for his family, friends and random acts of kindness.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Charlene Sullenberger. John is survived by his son, Michael Sullenberger; his father, Jim Sullenberger, and stepmother, Carolyn; his sisters, Cheryl Rubin and Kathwren Roesner (Paul); and his nephews, Evan, Devan, Josiah, Connor, Jeremiah, Alexander, and Aren, all of whom he cherished deeply.

John’s spirit touched many with his kindness, quiet strength and zest for life. He will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his son, Michael, and his ability to bring joy to those around him.

John found immense satisfaction in crafting delectable dishes for others. He cooked to make people happy. His satisfaction came from seeing others enjoy his food, a quiet reflection of his generous spirit. He also spent his entire adult life working in food service.

John was known for his jokes. He could spark laughter with a single line, a sly infectious grin tugging at the corner of his mouth and a twinkle in his eyes.

Some will also remember his amazing singing voice. He often filled the air with song, whether he was singing quietly at work or belting out a tune in private moments.

John’s thoughtfulness shone in the little things. He never missed a birthday or holiday call. He always lit up fireworks on the 4th of July with family gathered around.

He’d go out of his way to help anyone in need, lending a hand to a struggling family member, friend or stranger. His generosity knew no bounds, always giving freely to those he cared about.

Raised in Hendersonville NC, the outdoors was always John’s favorite playground. Throughout his life he’d wander mountain trails, bicycle, skateboard, camp, fish, paddle board, kayak or sit around a fire sharing stories under the stars with his son and nephews.

He also was an avid gamer. Uno, Battleship, checkers, LIFE—and Soo many others.

He was a master of video games from the old days of Atari Missile Command and Pong to his VR headset and his PlayStation 5. Often playing with family and friends online.

These moments of togetherness are treasures his family will always carry.

To his son, Michael, John was a devoted father, cheering every milestone with quiet pride.

John’s kindness, humor, and warmth live on in the meals shared, the songs remembered, adventures shared and the countless lives he touched.

A memorial will be held to honor him at a later date (to be announced). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to John’s Memorial Fund to defray the cost of his final expenses.

Though he is no longer with us, John’s spirit remains in the hearts of all who knew him.
